In the present

Written by Tyson Herald on . Posted in WBC Blog

On a typical Sunday or Monday Shelley and I sit down to go over our calendars for the next couple weeks. This past week we sat down and realized we have something going on almost every day/evening between now and Christmas with 2 evenings left open. Somehow, we’ve scheduled ourselves straight thru Christmas. If we’re not careful we’re gonna miss the whole thing!

Don’t get me wrong, we’re doing a lot of “good” things between now and Christmas. However, it’s really easy to become so focused on what we do and who we are that we miss opportunities in the present. Specifically, time with our families and celebrating why we do all this stuff anyways:Jesus his birth, and the fact that he came to be present with humanity.

Matthew 1:23 quotes the prophet Isaiah who foretold that “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means God with us)

God came to be with us! He still desires that today. Jesus came to show us what God is like. While Jesus left this earth to prepare a place for us his brother James reminded us to draw near to God and he’ll draw near to you.

I’m hoping to be present, wherever God places me this Christmas season. This time of year we can become so busy we miss the whole point. I also love the chance this time of year gives to spend time focusing on the gift that God sent over 2,000 years ago.

Take a deep breath. Be present. Enjoy where God has you today or you just might miss something special this Christmas season.

Christmas Lights

Written by Tyson Herald on . Posted in WBC Blog

Hanging Christmas lights can be a chore. However, once they’re up they make such an impact. I’ve always enjoyed driving around and looking at all the lights this time of year. They brighten an otherwise dreary time of year and once they are down you see just how much light they brought to a house.

Jesus told his followers in Matthew 5 that they are the light of the world.
Matthew 5:14-16 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither would you light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your father in heaven.”
As you see Christmas lights up this year think of this passage. The electricity that powers the light bulbs is like the Holy Spirit in our lives. He enables us to shine God’s light to a very dark world. We are represented by the bulbs. We are conduits of God’s grace and mercy shining His light to others through acts of love and good deeds.
If you look at the Christmas lights from a distance though you don’t even notice the bulbs. All you see is the light coming from the bulbs. It’s amazing that God uses us at all to help shine His light in this world. The most important thing this Christmas is that people see Jesus though, not us.
Merry Christmas!
