The next right thing.

You’ll often hear people say, “God has a plan for your life”. While I certainly believe that’s true, I find that I don’t often live like this. I think God has a plan for my life later, when I grow up. (if I ever grow up)

However, I believe that God not only has a plan for your distant future but also for your immediate future. Many times I have students who ask me how they discern what God’s will is for their lives? My suggestion is this… Following God today, will help you figure out what you should do tomorrow.

Jesus said we really could only handle one day at a time anyways (Matthew 6:34).

Let me encourage you to pay attention to what God may be leading you to do today. The only way you’ll be able to figure this out is by spending time with Him and in His Word.  (Go here for more on this)

Here’s one to get you started…

Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV)

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

God’s will for you today might include the following:

How can I show love to Him and others today?

What could I do to help create joy in someone’s life?

Is there an area I could help make peace?

Do I need to demonstrate more patience?

How do I show more kindness to my kids?

Are there areas of my life that don’t produce goodness?

Am I faithful to God, my spouse, my friends?

Would I be described as gentle in spirit?

Do I have self-control?

So what’s the next right thing listed above you need to work on in your life? I would suggest that whatever it is may be part of God’s will for your life today.
