3 Tips for Reading Your Bible

March 1, 2019 | Tyson Herald

By this time of year nearly every New Year's Resolution has failed. That doesn't mean you don't keep trying though. Especially when it comes to reading the Bible. Reading your Bible daily is one of the best things you can do to learn more about God and to become the person He wants you to be.

We know reading the Bible can be frustrating though. You ask yourself questions like: Where do I start? What are all these strange names? What do these ancient stories have to do with me today? How do I stay focused?

Here are 3 tips to help you in your reading...

1. Start with a reading plan. You can find one here https://www.westbridgedanville.com/read-your-bible/  If you've never read the Bible it can be quite intimidating. This is where a reading plan can come in handy. Plus, there are other people in our church reading the same thing at the same time which can help you hold each other accountable.

2. Quality is more important that quantity.
Reading a whole book or chapter of the Bible is great! However, if you can't remember what was said or know how to apply it to your life, it may have been a waste of time. Spend quality time on a few verses. Memorize them or spend time thinking on them throughout the day. You'll have a better understanding of those verses and you'll be amazed at how well you'll be able to remember them.
(this is not to discount the fact that understanding the context of scripture often comes thru reading larger portions all at once. However, if you're just starting, start small)

3. Ask good questions. Asking questions moves us from just reading, into comprehension and hopefully then to application.

Howard Hendricks in his book Living by the Book, had these 9 questions to think thru:
Is there....
an example for me to follow?
a sin to avoid?
a promise to claim?
a prayer to repeat?
a command to obey?
a condition to meet?
a verse to memorize?
an error to mark?
a challenge to face?
